Navajo Technical University

Crownpoint, NM — On November 10, 2025, Representatives from New Mexico Tech and Pecos Process Equipment and Service Company visited Navajo Technical University (NTU) to strengthen ongoing collaborations focused on advancing research and educational opportunities in science, engineering, and environmental sustainability.

During their visit, the team toured NTU’s Crownpoint campus and met with faculty and students from the university’s Engineering, Manufacturing, and Environmental Science programs. Discussions centered on enhancing hands-on learning experiences and exploring how NTU’s programs can continue to benefit both students and their home communities through innovative, real-world applications. The visit featured a demonstration of NTU’s water desalination unit, developed in partnership with Pecos Process Equipment and Service Company and led by NTU’s Environmental Science program. The unit is designed to convert brackish or contaminated water into clean, usable freshwater—an essential innovation for addressing water scarcity in rural and desert regions. The group observed how NTU’s system operates manually on campus, while a newer model installed at the Becenti Chapter House runs automatically.
The team also visited the Becenti, north of Crownpoint. On this site, the team examined a nearby water well used by residents for livestock, gaining valuable insight into how modern desalination and water treatment technologies can strengthen water security for Navajo communities. Among the participants was NTU alumna Darlene Wilson, a former research assistant in the Environmental Science program who is now pursuing graduate studies in Hydrology and Water Security at the University of Oklahoma. Her work exemplifies how NTU’s programs prepare students to lead in sustainable water management and environmental stewardship.

Through partnerships like this, Navajo Technical University’s Science, Engineering, and Environmental Science programs continue to equip students with the technical skills, research experience, and cultural understanding needed to develop innovative solutions that strengthen families, protect natural resources, and support the well-being of communities across the Navajo Nation.
