Comprehensive Evaluation
Evidence
Evidence for the Criteria for Accreditation
To demonstrate compliance with the accreditation standards of the Higher Learning Commission, an institution must provide a written narrative supported by appropriate documentation showing how it meets the HLC criteria for accreditation. A team of peer reviewers evaluates the institution’s submission to verify the validity of the evidence presented and to determine whether each core component of the criteria has been satisfied.
HLC also provides guidance to institutions on potential sources of documentation through its resource, Providing Evidence for the Criteria for Accreditation.
Identifying Evidence
The evidence submitted by an institution to demonstrate compliance with HLC’s criteria for
accreditation should:
- Substantiate the claims, facts, and arguments presented in the institutional narrative.
- Address concerns or recommendations identified by previous peer review teams.
- Clarify institutional practices, policies, or contextual factors unique to the institution.
- Strengthen the institution’s record of compliance with HLC standards and requirements.
- Demonstrate the institution’s commitment to academic quality, financial sustainability, and institutional integrity.
The HLC encourages institutions to present comprehensive and well-organized documentation to ensure that the evidence provided is relevant, credible, and persuasive in supporting the institution’s accreditation case.
