Crownpoint, New Mexico – On November 20, 2024, Dwight Witherspoon, the Water Rights Unit Attorney for the Navajo Nation Department of Justice, presented alongside Principal Hydrologist Robert Kirt.
Robert Kirt discussed the challenges faced by the Navajo Nation, including water contamination and infrastructure issues that hinder the delivery of reliable drinking water to residents. He highlighted ongoing projects related to water settlement agreements, such as transferring water between states, and the need for specific bills regarding waterlines and projects to be approved by local state representatives.
Mr. Witherspoon emphasized the importance of writing to your congressional representative. By doing so, community members can advocate for essential legislation to secure funding for ongoing water projects. Such efforts are crucial in ensuring our communities’ access to clean, running water.
