Metrology4
Advanced Manufacturing major Marcie Vandever of Thoreau, NM operates the Faro Tracker Arm at the NTU Fab Lab.

As part of the $3,500,000 NTU was awarded by the National Science Foundation to establish the NTU Center for Advanced Manufacturing, Mr. H. Scott Halliday and his team will be working on a metrology certification project. NTU’s metrology certification project came about through a need to not only develop a workforce to provide support services to economic development plans for advanced manufacturing on the Navajo Nation. This also fits in well with regional and national needs for trained inspectors and equipment operators.

The project incorporates formal training within various STEM curricula to provide industry standard certifications in advanced metrology technology, specifically, Faro Laser Scanner, Faro Laser Tracker, and Faro Tracker Arm with Laser Scanner Attachment. NTU partnered with industry to develop educational materials leading to certifications primarily in operating technical hardware and software and to adapt curricula created in conjunction with and by industry for coordinate-measuring machine (CMM) and scanner training.

Metrology9
Aaron Sansosie of Nazlini, AZ enrolled in NTU's Advanced Manufacturing program after graduating from NTU's Building Information Modeling program in spring 2018. Sansosie currently interns with the NTU Fab Lab.

During the creation of the dimensional metrology certification project, it was important to gain insight from various sources. These sources included metrology organizations, metrology companies, government agencies and established standards in order to gain insight into what was needed from the equipment operator to the data analysist. NTU needed information from wide ranging applications so that the material could be implemented into current NTU STEM programs, such as:
A.A.S. - Building Information Modeling
B.A.S. - Advanced Manufacturing
B.S. - Industrial Engineering

The project will be looking to erect a new building for the Metrology program as soon as possible so be on the lookout for new construction coming in the near future. If you’d like more information about metrology or how it could apply to your program, please contact H. Scott Halliday at hhalliday@navajotech.edu. NTU. Endless Possibility.
