Navajo Technical University STEM & SKILLS Program provides high school students with opportunities to explore their career and academic interests and spark new passions. STEM & SKILLS also allow high school students to get a taste of college life and meet other students from other high schools.

STEM & SKILLS is a Dual Credit summer program which offers high school students the opportunity to take online classes thru the main campus on NTU campus located in Crownpoint, New Mexico. The students experience college life during the summer. The program is 5 weeks long.

The program focuses on a number of diverse subjects, such as Welding, Construction, Business and Entrepreneurship, Culinary, Computer Programming and Engineering. STEM & SKILLS offers both residential and commuter options. We work with your high school teachers and administration to match courses and projects that are meaningful to students, school and community. Limited slots are available for students interested in living on campus.

In addition, not only are students able to take classes from college professors or visiting scholars, but they’re also able to listen to lectures from alumni and participate in social activities.

STEM AND SKILLS offers admission through the Dual Credit application process.The program is specific to students from high schools with Dual Credit agreements with NTU. Check the program website for admission requirements.

STEM AND SKILLS offers admission for High School Students through the Dual Credit application process. For students who graduated from high school in 2020 or 2021, admission can be made thru the NTU Undergraduate Application for process. Check the program website for admission requirements.

The STEM & SKILLS Program is fun and educational, plus there is no charge to the student!

L.E.A.P. Scholar Expectations and Responsibilities

As the third cohort of L.E.A.P. Scholars, students admitted to the Summer 2021 L.E.A.P. will be representing not only themselves and their families, but also the NTU staff that coordinated L.E.A.P. It is our hope that by providing an intensive summer bridge program, that we can help admitted first-time enrolled students to achieve university success by offering them college courses and opportunities to build long-lasting friendships. In this capacity, L.E.A.P. Scholars will be expected to represent themselves, their families, and the program in the best light.

L.E.A.P. Scholars are expected to abide by the following:

must adhere to University policies and regulations as set forth by the NTU Board of Regents and Administration. You can view the undergraduate catalogue at the following link: http://www.navajotech.edu/students/policies-docs.
must commit themselves to the diversity statement on the L.E.A.P. application, which states: NTU does not discriminate on the basis of gender identity, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, or any other unique identifiers. must attend L.E.A.P. in its entirety, which includes holidays and weekends, and participate in ALL activities and classes unless prohibited by physical disability, cognitive disability, or medical issues.
must show proof of COVID-19 vaccinations
must pass the free college courses being offered under L.E.A.P. with a “D” or above. Failure to pass these courses will put the student at risk for paying the University back.
must maintain a positive attitude when participating in courses, workshops, activities, off-campus trips, residential meetings, and any other L.E.A.P. experiences.
must let staff know if they are having difficulties with internet issues immediately as the majority of the program is virtual.
must notify Sherietta Martinez-Brown immediately if they have been exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID during the Summer 2021 LEAP Program.

Applying to L.E.A.P.

Eligibility
L.E.A.P. is an intensive summer bridge program for first-time university students enrolling with NTU. Our primary purpose is to assist first-time university students in jumpstarting their academic lives and to ease their transition into our community. Accepted applicants will participate in all L.E.A.P. activities and classes while upholding the values and regulations of NTU.

The following are eligibility requirements to be a L.E.A.P. Scholar:

applicants must have enrolled with NTU for Fall 2021.
applicants must be a first time university student, meaning they just graduated from high school.
applicants must have no history of behavioral issues in high school.

L.E.A.P. College Courses

College Success (SSC 100; 1 Credits)
Designed for first-time enrolled students, this course adequately prepares participants for the college experience by enhancing skills and increasing knowledge of college life and culture, study and test-taking strategies, and managing students’ financial and educational futures. Students will also discover helpful information that will aid in their planned transfer to another four-year institution, if that is the students’ goal. As for all courses at NTU, the Diné Philosophy of Education is an important component of this class.

Intermediate Algebra (MATH 1215; 4 Credits)
This course will cover the study of linear and quadratic functions and an introduction to polynomial, absolute value, rational, radical, exponential and logarithmic functions. Course material will be applied to real and relaitve fields of study, which includes Navajo culture and Diné Philosophy of Education and mathematics pertaining to student's major.

Reading and Writing Skills (ENG 098; 3 Credits)
In this condensed, four-week course, we will work towards strengthening students’ reading comprehension and writing skills. We will make our way through literature that is relevant to our lives on the Navajo Nation while paying special attention to writing exercises related to readings and off-campus experiences. Through journal exercises, both instructor and student-led in-class discussions, essay writing, brief writing exercises, presentations, and grammar reviews, we will focus on improving students’ written and oral communication skills. Students will also learn to read and understand culturally responsive texts that value their personhood and draft short essays using various rhetorical forms. Successful completion of this course involves adequate participation in class discussions, writing assignments, field exercises, critical thinking, and above all, a positive attitude and open mind. We will think deeply about writing, reading, and communication within our own historical and cultural context so that, by the end of the session, students will have developed as critical thinkers, readers, and writers at NTU

Thank you for your interest in the Leadership, Enrichment, and Advancement Program (L.E.A.P.). We are excited to offer this new opportunity for students looking to get a head start on their college journey.

About L.E.A.P.
L.E.A.P. is an intensive summer bridge program for first-time university students enrolling with Navajo Technical University (NTU). L.E.A.P. introduces students to campus life before New Student Orientation by offering them extensive academic courses, an introduction to NTU resources and programs, a range of extracurricular activities and by connecting them with supportive peers and mentors. Students accepted into the program are designated as L.E.A.P. Scholars and receive full funding for lodging, meals, and supplies for the duration of the program. L.E.A.P. is coordinated by the Department of Student Services.

While L.E.A.P. is a free summer bridge program, here are some other benefits of attending:

Step 3: Select a course(s) or a Program of Study if you are a new student

Identify the course(s) in which you would like to enroll. You can write the course number, section, and name on a sheet of paper. And login into My.NTU, click on the course name to learn more information such as course description, dates, times, room location, instructor, tuition, etc. (refer to the MyNTU download instruction for more information).

Note: If you have any holds on your account due to payment, prerequisites, or other restrictions, you will need to speak with an advisor. You can call ADD NAME, EMAIL, PHONE to help you select your course.

What if I am a distance student?
Although we do not offer the Accuplacer online, we do offer the exam at our campus branch sites, Teec Nos Pos (928.882.3164) and Chinle (928.882.3135). Please call the appropriate site to schedule an appointment.

Step 4: Admissions, add a course to your schedule

New Students, select a program of study and download the program checklist. Checklist can be found on the NTU website for each Certificates and Degree Programs. NTU Catalog Electronic version available online at www.navajotech.edu.

Since books and supply costs vary from program to program and year to year, costs for books and supplies are calculated separately from tuition rates but still apply as part of the total coast of attendance.

On-Line Course Fee: $35.00 fee for each on-line course to cover support service (i.e., tutoring and on-line learning tools).

You can attend on campus orientation or online. Student access to the orientation: https://navajotech.goorientation.com.

The online orientation includes pertinent information such as academic studies, support services, policies & safety, Title IX, student life, and paying for college.

When you complete the online orientation, you will receive an email with a Certificate of Completion. It may also be available to print from the orientation platform, itself. Step 8: Purchase your Books

The NTU Bookstore maintains a complete inventory of college textbooks and school supplies including notebooks, pens, pencils, folders and other items.

HOURS: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Each Semester students may begin charging books to their accounts. Class schedules can also be faxed to the bookstore at 505.387.7377 in order to reserve the textbooks that are needed.

Step 9: Complete your Registration

Note: Some courses require an approval. If you have Approvals needed, your registration will not process until we have looked at your registration and approved it. Administrators review pending registrations every day. You are not registered in the selected course(s), until you get a confirmation e-mail from us or until you can see your courses listed on your schedule in MyNTU.

Once you complete the registration process, you will receive a confirmation email from the NTU Registrar confirming your course registration(s). If you do not receive a confirmation within 24 hours, please call us at 505.387.4726.

Regional Transport (Fleet Management NTU Student Transportation)

Transportation Enrollment is January 16, 2024 to January 30, 2024

Transportation Enrollment Crownpoint Schedule Chinle Schedule

The Student Transportation Procedures is specifically designed for Navajo Technical University students that are commuting from one of the established routes. NTU Students may apply at Modular 1 building, Fleet Management office located on the North side of NTU campus. The Transportation registration period starts at the beginning of each of the semesters. Semester cost under Student Handbook and Fleet Management is $ 425.00 per semester. Transportation is from Monday to Friday of each class session. NTU students is based on each route of 5 or more students per route under Fleet Policy and Procedures. Max limit is 14 students per NTU van per route. Student Transportation is not a right but a privilege.

Eligibility
The NTU student must be enrolled with Navajo Technical University and a Fleet application must submit with the following documents:

Student Transportation Application, completed and signed
Copy of NTU Student I.D.
Copy of NTU Class schedule

Once all documents are in place, the Fleet Management office will then validate the documents.

If approved, a ticket will be issued to the NTU student, who will be totally responsible for the safe keeping and usage of the ticket.
If disproved, justification will be provided to the student who may appeal to the Dean of Student Services within 3 working days of decision. Both Fleet Coordinator and Dean of Student Services will make the final agreement decision.

Student Transportation will be closed for further registration once the route is full or close date listed for that semester. The Coordinator will submit Transportation charge to the Business Office for process under Student Billing. Charges are listed in the NTU Handbook. Pro-Rate are not allowable, and the fees may change without Navajo Technical University hand book changes rate as listed.

Transportation schedule/time can be delayed or changed due to inclement weather condition by the Fleet Coordinator or designee. All routes are based on NTU Student enrollment of 5 or more students being transported and will be determine by the Fleet Coordinator.

Transportation Drivers
Drivers are assigned routes by the Fleet Coordinator. Drivers can refuse a NTU student if there is any cause for Safety concern or a violation has occurred per Student Handbook. The NTU Driver will submit a documented report to the Fleet Coordinator upon return to the NTU campus.

Is there an entrance exam?
Applicants take the Accuplacer test to help determine placement in the appropriate classes.

Must I have a high school diploma?
Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED to be eligible for acceptance.

What are the GPA and SAT/ACT cutoffs for admissions?
Navajo Technical University is currently an open enrollment University, so there are no cutoffs for the GPA or the SAT/ACT.

What if I don’t know exactly what program I’m interested in?
No problem! This is one of many reasons why we require all potential students to meet with the Job Placement Counselor or Coordinator.

Are any support services available?
At Navajo Technical University, we pride ourselves on an extensive Support Network designed to help each and every one of our students achieve their career goals. Our team is ready to assist you with the admissions process, financial aid, and advisement.

Will my credits from Navajo Technical University transfer to other colleges?
Transferring credits from NTU to another institution is not guaranteed, as it is up to the receiving institution to decide if they will accept NTU’s credits. Check with the Registrar at the other school to find out if they accept our credits.

Will Navajo Technical University accept credits previously earned by another institution?
NTU does consider credits for transfer from other accredited colleges. Decisions to accept incoming credits to NTU from another school are made by the Registrar. Information regarding these previously earned credits should be shared with your Advisor when inquiring about Navajo Technical University.

How do I begin enrolling with NTU?
Start with an Undergraduate Application, fill out and send with documents or the application itself, but will be pending. The documents are an Official original Certificate of Indian Blood, an official high school transcript or official GED test scores in a sealed envelope and if you attended any other college or university, an Official transcript in a sealed envelope. Once the application and ALL documents are received, you will receive an official letter of acceptance to the college.

What are the deadlines for submitting all of my application materials?
If you’re applying as a freshman it is best to get it in as soon as you can, for Housing and Financial Aid purposes. For the Fall semester it is usually great to have everything in by June. For the Spring Semester it will be in December.

Does NTU provide childcare?
Yes, the Child Care is open to full time students and the day care also encourages you to apply early. You can contact the manager at 505.786.4122

Does NTU provide housing?
Housing is provided for full time students. There are the Efficiency apartments for single students and Family Housing for families. The Residential Department does have an application process, if you need more information you can contact the residential manager at 505.786.4175

Does NTU provide different Modes of Instruction?
Navajo Technical University is currently offering different modes of instruction such as Online - Asynchronous, Online - Synchronous, Face-to-Face, and Blended or hybrid. More information can be found within this document.

NTU provides residential housing for both single students and students with families at the main campus. Rooms and apartments subject to the following eligibility requirements: Students who are enrolled full time at NTU, and have submitted all required documents are eligible to apply.

What Is Dual Credit Program?
“Dual credit program” means a program that allows high school students to enroll in college-level courses offered by a college that may be academic or career technical but not remedial or developmental, and simultaneously to earn credit toward high school graduation and a postsecondary degree or certificate.

Dual Credit is supported and sanctioned by New Mexico Legislation 6.30.7 NMAC (PED) and Arizona Revised Statutes (A.R.S.) § 15-342 (13), § 15-701.01 (F), § 15-1444 (B) (4), and § 15-1821.01.

Purpose
The purposes of dual credit are to provide high school students the opportunity to enroll in college-level academic or career technical courses offered by a post-secondary educational institution, and to permit those enrolled students to simultaneously earn credit toward high school graduation and a post-secondary degree or certificate.

The programs may also encourage more students to consider higher education, especially students from underrepresented groups. Research indicates that dual credit programs can lead to better completion rates for both high school and college, reduce the need for remediation, shorten time to a diploma or degree completion, reduce the cost of higher education, reinforce the concept of life-long learning through an educational continuum, provide an alternative for students tempted to leave high school to enter the workforce, and provide equal access to higher education opportunities to students whether rural or urban. Especially when offered through distance learning.

Eligible Courses
College courses that are academic or career technical that simultaneously earn credit toward high school graduation and a postsecondary degree or certificate shall be eligible for dual credit. Remedial, developmental and physical education activity courses are not eligible for dual credit. Dual credit courses must meet the public education department standards and benchmarks.

College courses eligible for dual credit shall meet the rigor for postsecondary institution credit and be congruent with the postsecondary institution’s academic standards. Dual credit courses offered in high school settings shall conform to college academic standards. Course requirements for high school students enrolled in dual credit courses shall be equal to those of regular college students. Dual credit courses that are part of the general education common core for postsecondary institutions are eligible for transfer among New Mexico postsecondary institutions pursuant to Subsection D of 21-1B-3 NMSA 1978.

Course Requirements
The course requirements for high school students enrolled in dual credit courses shall be equal to those of regular college students. Course requirement information shall include the course prerequisites, course content, grading policy, attendance requirements, course completion requirements, performance standards, and other related course information.

What is the Accuplacer?
The Accuplacer is a Computerized Placement Tool designed to provide placement and advising information for students entering college. NTU uses the Accuplacer to help students get into the classes where they are most likely to succeed. In other words, the Accuplacer determines the course placement where you will begin taking classes. A counselor/advisor will go over your scores with you after you complete the assessment and help you create a degree plan and get ready to register for classes.

The Next-Generation Skills Insight™ statements are available to students on the ACCUPLACER website. Encourage your students to review these statements prior to testing to better understand the skills they'll need to demonstrate on each test. The statements are also a great resource post-testing to help students interpret their performance.

Remember: Your scores determine which classes you may take.

The Accuplacer takes approximately two and two 1/2 hours to complete, however, the assessments are not timed and you may take as long as you need.

Who needs to take the Accuplacer assessment?
The Accuplacer is required for all incoming students, unless they have already taken and passed college level English and math at another college. Students can also waive the Accuplacer with a high ACT score.

Accuplacer Testing:
All new students are required to take the Accuplacer placement test to place students in the appropriate Math and English courses. Transfer students who have successfully completed a college level English and Math with a C or better at another institution (as recorded on an official transcript) will not have to take the test if the course was completed within 10 years of the admission date on the application.

NOTE: Students who place lower on the Accuplacer placement test than the English or Math courses required by the program requirements for the certificate or degree they are seeking will be required to take additional English or Math courses to help them reach the level of proficiency required for the level they need to complete their certificate or degree. EXAMPLE: a student whose Accuplacer score places them in ENG-098 will have to satisfactorily complete ENG-098 (a grade of C or better) before they can take the higher level required English course(s) for their certificate or degree.

FAQ

Where do I take the Accuplacer?
You will take the Accuplacer in the Admissions/Registration Building located between the Library and Cafeteria. Call 505.387.7365 for scheduling.

What if I am a distance student?
Although we do not offer the Accuplacer online, we do offer the exam at our campus branch sites, Teec Nos Pos (928.656.3600) and Chinle (928.674.5764). Please call the appropriate site to schedule an appointment.

What will I be assessed in? The Accuplacer has three parts:

Reading Comprehension – multiple choice questions related to reading skills, such as identifying the main idea and making inferences.
Sentence Skills (English) – multiple choice questions related to sentence structure and grammar…how sentences are put together and what makes a sentence complete.
Mathematics (Arithmetic and Elementary Algebra) – multiple choice questions that measure your understanding of math. Questions that range from arithmetic to college-level mathematics are included. You will begin with the easiest section, and depending on your math skills you may advance to more challenging Algebra questions.

How can I best prepare for the Accuplacer?
The Accuplacer Web-Based Study App features practice tests in Arithmetic, Elementary Algebra, College-Level Math, Reading Comprehension and Sentence Skills. You can access the site from your computer, tablet, or smartphone and familiarize yourself with the basice content areas of Accuplacer tests. The Study App site inlcudes the following features: "Learn As You Go" tests provide you with explanation of the correct or incorrect responses, Sample Tests help you experience what a real test may be like on test day, Save your work and process, and resume practicing at a later time, Review your score history to identify areas of strength and weaknesses, and 6 months of access to the Accuplacer Web-Based Study App. NOTE: Sign-Up is required on the CollegeBoard site to download Study App

Can I retake the Accuplacer if I don’t like the scores I received?
Yes you may. A review of the subject area is strongly encouraged before you retake the Accuplacer. Students must pay a $50 fee to take additional challenge tests.

Tuition and rate applies to NTU Student schedule (30) minutes before scheduled class and (30) minutes after scheduled class. Online courses will be given (2) hours of study time per credit. (Ex: 3 credit online course = 6 hours of child care services for enrolled child). Child Care Director will meet with NTU Students utilizing their financial aid to pay for child care services prior to child care services, to devise a Child Care Service schedule for the semester child is enrolled.

Refund Policy
Students who officially withdraw or drop courses are entitled to a partial tuition refund depending on date of withdrawal. All additional fees are nonrefundable. Any refunds due to the student will be processed by the NTU Business Office and approved by the Registrar and Finance Director. Refund checks will be mailed to the student once processed. Refunds amounts are calculated according to the following guidelines:

Tuition and Course Fee Refunds/Credits:
Tuition will be refunded or credited to a student’s account according to the following schedule which is based upon the regular semester schedule:

100% refund – before instruction begins
80% refund – 1 to 14 calendar days
60% refund – 15 to 21 calendar days
40% refund – 22 to 28 calendar days
20% refund – 29 to 35 calendar days
0% refund – after the 35^th calendar day

Summer school refund will be determined according to the number of weeks in the summer session.

Meal plan refunds/credits:
The meal plan charge will be prorated per week. A meal plan refund form must be approved by the Culinary Arts/Food Services Coordinator and Finance Director.

Book store refunds or credits:
Books and accompanying disks or workbooks may be returned if items are returned in good or original condition in order to receive any refund.

Student Billing Policy
It is the sole responsibility of the student for paying or fulfilling all financial obligations to the college prior to graduation. In absence of meeting this financial obligation, official college transcripts will not be provided to the student, potential employers, and/or other institutions of higher learning and student will not be able to receive his/her certificate or degree until the financial obligation is met. Unmet financial obligations to the college will also prevent re-admission to NTU.
